Site Security
To protect the privacy and integrity of information, Northern Iowa students, faculty, staff and alumni should always follow the recommendations listed below:
- Utilize the latest version of either Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. The MyUNIverse system is best viewed and is most secure when you use one of these two browsers.
- Your password must be kept confidential. Change it frequently to ensure that the information cannot be guessed or used by others. Your password is initially set to the first two digits of your last name, followed by the # sign, followed by the
four digits of your birth month and day. Initial logon to the system requires you to change your password. See the password requirements to view
what the system requires in selecting a new password.
In addition, it is recommended that you:
- Choose a password that is difficult to guess
- Do not share your password with anyone
- Do not write your password down where others might see it
- Be sure others are not watching you enter information on the keyboard when using the system.
- Never leave your computer unattended while logged on to MyUNIverse. Others may approach your computer and gain access to your information if you walk away.
- Familiarize yourself with the visual cues displayed on your browser which indicate that you have connected with a secure web server. A secure server is denoted by a solid blue line across the top of the browser window and an unbroken yellow "key" icon in the lower left corner. If these cues are missing from personal areas of MyUNIverse, notify Information Technology Services immediately.
- Click "Logout" when you are finished using the system to properly end your session. Once a session has been ended, no further transactions can be processed until you log on to the system again.
- Close your browser when you are finished, so that others cannot view any personal information displayed on your computer.
- Keep your computer free of viruses. Use virus protection software to routinely check for a virus on your computer. Never allow a virus to remain on your computer while accessing the MyUNIverse system.
- Remove any spyware applications from your computer. Spyware is the name which was given
to software that -- without the user of the program knowing that the software performs this kind of action --
traces the user's usage of the internet and sends this information -- again without the user knowing this is
happening -- to a server designated by the developer of the spyware software. See the Important Notice Regarding MyUNIVerse and Spyware Programs
for more information and suggestions for removing spyware from your system.
- If you have reason to believe your account is being used by someone else, notify Information Technology Services immediately.
- To further assure yourself of the privacy of your data, you may wish to examine the AccessUNI server certificate.
To view the certificate from a secure document (see item 2 above), drag on the View menu down to Page Info in Netscape (use File, Properties, Security in Internet Explorer).
Click on the Security tab, then the "View" button and the server certificate will be displayed. The certificate will contain information similar to the following:
